Angry Birds Star Wars Review

On January 27, 2013

Slingin’ birds to kill the pigs. Aye, now that is me kind of app. Pigs for slaughter is what I say… kill em’ then eat em’. Nothin’ simpler than that, aye? This is the very reason why Angry Birds, regardless of theme, is always a welcome app in me heart – errr, iPhone I mean. For tonight’s festivities, me ol’ tanker of a brain is looking to check out the new Angry Birds release, the Star Wars theme. I say ye should feast yer eye sockets on it too.

Angry Birds Star Wars – what will they come up with next, right? Rovio has really built this mobile app franchise into a never ending gaming paradise with a simple but ovulating concept. Ovulating because it keeps evolving. Today, it uses the whole Star Wars theme, tomorrow – who knows?

So, What is Up with Angry Birds Star Wars?

Rovio has put out all the stops here. The concept remains the same – pigs stole some eggs and the birds want revenge. The difference is that the whole 1977 sci-fi classic becomes the background – from the sand-filled world of Tatooine where Luke first discovered his inclination to the force all the way to the Death Star, where Darth Vader parries and slashes with Luke’s first Jedi master, Obi Wan Kenobi. Aye, you will see all those familiar environments emulated into the game.

An Angry Bird with a Light Saber

Once you immerse yourself in the game, you will instantly notice all the pigs you are meant to target and kill wearing storm trooper armor. This goes on and on. I am told that a pig wearing a Vader costume comes out at one point as well, though I have not been privy to that chance yet. In any case, just looking at the pigs sporting the armor can bring a tear to a person’s eye and a giggle to his lips. But the pigs as the empire’s elite aren’t the main feature of this app, the Angry Birds designed to play certain protagonist characters from the movie are.

Angry Birds Star Wars App

From the get-go, you will notice a furry bird looking much like Chewbacca as well as a yellow one emulating Han Solo, complete with the signature hairdo and blasters that can shoot 3 laser bursts which you can pinpoint on certain structures. Fling these and they will surprise you with special functions you can use to pass specific levels with varying difficulty. And should you need a light saber to help you in your battles, call on the red Skywalker bird, which can sprout up what you need with just a tap. With the light saber in hand, the red bird can slice and dice any obstacle with ultimate precision and supreme accuracy. Other characters such as Obi Wan Kenobi and the like have their own special skill set and function, which you can easily discover later on. Just trust in the force.

Graphics and Gameplay

Angry Birds Star Wars doesn’t deviate from the formula that has skyrocketed Rovio to its plush plateau as an app developer. The gameplay remains the same, apart from the new functions assigned to the Star Wars-themed characters. As for the graphics, little tweaks here and there have made this version a delight for the eyes. The visuals are crisp and colorful bringing with it the whole Lucas Arts effect full-on in a wackier light.

The Bottom Line

Getting this for your Android or iOS device is a no brainer. The game is dirt cheap, a sure hit, and an app that you will return to every time your current girlfriend replaces you with a Justin Beiber look-alike. Aye, those cold, lonely nights can be filled with nerdy fun that only Angry Birds Star Wars can bring to the table.
