Infinity Blade 2 Review

On December 9, 2012

Infinity Blade II be one o’ those titles that sparked genuine interest in me. Sure, the combat be solid, and the graphics amazing’ but what really captured me interest is the effort poured into that game in telling’ a long revenge story. Aye, I have known more than a few vengeful souls, and their stories still reverberate within me head at times. From Hambo to me good friend Barry Steakfries, each person in between that seem to be proficient in fighting’ with weapons seem to be out seeking’ revenge on one thing or another. Infinity Blade II doesn’t deviate from the formula, and instead chooses to compound on it.

Like so many brigs I’ve been chained in, the game had sunk me low into the world of legend in his quest to destroy the God King. The thing is, what I thought to be the only title like it, made sequel, so I am left to ponder just how well it holds up against the original.

The Story: A Better Narrative

Infinity Blade 1, while not the most diverse story teller, chose to show one, which is a lot more than most other iOS games chose to do. Indeed, actions spoke more wildly and the narrative was woven a little clumsily into the game. In Infinity Blade II, mystery be the catch ‘o the day and it tells a story of an immortal warrior. The thing be that the warrior knows not where he is from, or why he does not succumb to death like so many ‘o me fellow corsairs have succumbed to the siren’s wail. The narrative, however, flows more confidently than the first iteration of the series, and it shows through great story telling’ as well. I was fairly impressed.

The Gameplay and Graphics: More ‘o the same with a Few added Tweaks

If ye played the first game, then ye get what ye have to do. In order to defeat the big baddie in the end. Aye, it will be hard journey as the challenge truly is the charm. Once again, yer experience points are yer means to increase yer strength in this title. Another thing that has been co-opted by the sequel is the need to change weapons every so often to speed up yer leveling. One can be forgiven in thinking’ that this title be another pallet swap, and that it is just Infinity Blade with improved graphics (more on that later), but what lacks in anything new, they make up for with much tighter controls and response times. Each twitch for a parry, block, and every combo you string together feels hard fought and it would seem like an achievement when ye do land your kill combos.

On the new side, the developers added two new weapon fighting’ styles. Besides yer buckler and cutlass, ye be treated to the titanic heavy weapons which are slower, but hit so much harder and the dual wield option which removes the defense so that ye fight with more power. Meself prefers holding a flintlock in one hand and a cutlass on the other. Both these new styles work very well in mechanics, so I suggest ye try ’em out.

As for the world, around ye, I was simply impressed. Over me time on land, I had found that consoles had some great graphics, while PCs always had the best capacity for such. It was to my surprise that the 3D models, light effects, and rendering of the world were even better than the first. It truly pushes the tech within the little iOS device bugger to a higher point. In fact, in all improvements I’d have to say the graphics were the best.

Once again, Ye should get it

Aye, I am no fool, I see that I be a little tipped in the favor of this game. However, this time it feels like I’m even more correct in suggesting’ that ye get this title. Tighter controls and a more confident presentation really makes this game an incredible title to play. At the same time, for those that use the in-game mall, be ready to fight for yer life still because the challenge does not get any easier with better gear. Arrgh, if ye’ll leave me be for a while mateys; I will lock meself in me quarters for a few days, there’s this one boss I just can’t shank properly…
