PBA Bowling Challenge Review

On November 26, 2013

Yo-ho-ho and a bottle full of rum!!! Ahoy there me lads. Yer friendly pirate is happy because I was able to beat Walter Ray Williams, Jr. in our bowling competition. Well, at least in this app called PBA Bowling Challenge. Har, har, har. Aye, this old bucko also plays sports when not booty hunting. Let me introduce ye me hearties to the game with this PBA Bowling Challenge review straight from the sea.

It’s Bowling with a Twist

PBA Bowling Challenge has something for everyone. If you would like to play an instant game that you can repeat over again, there’s the quickplay mode that you can try. This is also perfect if you want to practice your skills first before playing the career mode or tournament. On the other modes, you need to work your way up by winning the game in order to go to the next level, unlock opponents, qualify on tournaments and access new bowling allies. These modes make use of energy so if you run out of energy playing, you have to wait for it to replenish or you may purchase gold pins to buy energy. These gold pins, as you may have guessed are in app purchases that cost real money.

The twist with this game is that there are balls with special powers like one that would explode when it touches a pin ensuring a strike. You would not find balls like these in real life, would you? These special balls also need to recharge before you can use them again, though it does not really take a lot of time. After using the other special balls, the first ball that you used may already be ready to be used again. But if you want to experience something that is closest to the real game, you may try playing with the regular ball, though this is entirely up to you.

With Realistic Sound and Nice Graphics

There is an upbeat background music while on the main menu and choosing your options. But when you start playing the game, the background music would stop. All you would hear is the ball rolling on the lane and that distinct sound when you hit the pins. This worked for the game because you would feel like you are playing in a real bowling alley. If it has background music while playing, you may not be able to fully appreciate the realistic sound, which adds to the positive game experience.

The graphics are not over the top but they are good enough. The bowling allies have everything that you would expect in real allies. Compared to other free bowling games that look like cartoons, this one is better. The motion of the ball when rolling on the lane and the effect when the pins are hit are also well executed.

Pros and Cons

One of the good things about the game is that it’s free. Controls work great and there are various modes to select from. While the gameplay gets repetitive, the different levels, tournaments and upgrades make it interesting. On the higher levels of the game, you would need more energy in order to play them. This means that you may run out of energy quicker and wait for a longer time before you can continue playing; unless you choose to buy premium currency for an instant boost on your energy.

The Verdict

Overall, this is a good game to add on your list of apps. It might be tempting though to spend real cash when you run out of energy. But you can play the game and still enjoy it even without spending any money. What can I say, this bloody Pirate is well addicted. Garrgh!

How do you actually purchase any gold pins though? every time I enter my credit card number, the numbers all turn red like Im pretty sure they are supposed to. But there is a small SAVE button at bottom right hand corner where you entered you cc information. However, the thing doesn’t activate or even change colors when you put your cursor over it? I was going to by the 500 pins for
.99 but it wont let me even submit my credit card information! Thanks for any help you might be able to provide!
