Well ahoy there ye lubber! I be lookin’ into a new app right now, somethin’ you just might be interested in. Aye, whenever I be on land sipping on this here grog that the fat barkeep over yonder slid to me, I like to be rubbin’ me nose into the latest that Apple or that jolly green Android robot has in store. Today, I be chatterin’ about Monster Quest. And boy, are ye in for a nice show.
Monster Quest, by Gree, is a gaming app that somewhat resembles a pot full of a witch’s brew. Well, I think of it that way simply because the game incorporates 3 different elements that you would normally find as standalone. If you don’t get my drift, let me make it simpler – Monster Quest is an empire/land building game, a fantastical RPG-like questing system, and, of course, a monster/creature breeding game. In effect, the game is a fusion of sorts. How does it fare, you may ask? Well, to be honest with you, it fares pretty well.
The Look
From the typical visual standpoint, Monster Quest is a beauty. The graphics are clean and sharp, the artwork somewhat impeccably cartoonish in nature. Since the game has a fantasy-based setting, the graphics and artwork makes it standout.
The Learning Curve
Upon my initial run through of the game, I was immediately immersed in a short tutorial, which in my opinion was dull and quite thin. I forged on through and experienced the first instance of questing in the game. This part, though you may not realize it, is part of the tutorial system and the early beginnings of your own adventure in the game. Obviously, part of the questing is the reward system, where you will be given in-game currency or a special item on each quest that you complete. Monster Quest makes use of this system to its maximum benefit.
It took me just about 3 minutes in total to get the hang of the game. But, then again, I am quite experienced with these kinds of games, so let’s just put the curve at about 5 to 7 minutes for newbies.
Resources, Creatures, and Your Empire
As you go through the seemingly endless supply of quests, you will have the opportunity to collect resources and capture creatures. This is, of course, all a part of the game. And, they are in fact necessary in the empire building segment of the game. Remember, one of your goals is to build a flourishing community that will enable you to create more powerful creatures from the creatures you capture during questing. As you can see, everything is connected.
As your village or kingdom improves in its infrastructure through the resources you gather, you will be able to breed and fuse creatures to form stranger but immensely stronger creatures – monsters you will use to wage war on your friends. Yes, the fun in this game is in multiplayer battles, where you pit your perfected creation against that of your friend’s.
It’s Free but Limited
The game has been developed by Gree to be totally free to play. However, like every other free game, there are limitations. In this case, your limitation will be in the energy you can spend on actions, be it building, questing, or battling. Once you exhaust your energy, you will need to wait and recharge before you can go on with your next series of actions. If you don’t want to wait, you can always buy special items that will let you recharge your energy instantly using real money, expensive as it may be.
The Judgment
The game isn’t unique. There have been a lot of fusion-type fantasy games within the monster breeding genre before. So, really, no originality here by Gree. However, the game is still quite entertaining and fun, whether you are using the latest Android or iOS powered devices. So, download and try it – it is free anyways, right?
