If thar be one thing you learn by being a pirate, it be battle strategy. Whether it be damaging and boarding a ship or invading a stinky port full o’ wenches and loot, a scallywag learns to read the defenses of his enemies and sees the holes where an arrow, a cannon ball, or a sharp cutlass can strike at. Aye, so playing mobile games like me favorite, Wars Online – Defend Your Kingdom, should be easy enuff’. Well, we be taking a look at it right now and me experience playing it.
The Premise
Wars Online – Defend Your Kingdom is a mobile game that combines 3 genres – strategy, arcade, and tower defense. Aye, you read that right, Wars Online is the bomb. Imagine being able to create an app where a player can immerse himself in 3 different aspects of the game.
Anyway, the game has a simple premise. You have a castle and your enemy has theirs, both facing each other in a 2D, side scrolling map. Obviously, if the enemy successfully infiltrates your castle, you lose. So, your first objective is to defend the castle at all costs using a variety of weapons and troops, primarily grunts or foot soldiers and the very dependable archer units.
Now, while you set your forces to defend the castle, you will need to come up with an effective strategy to infiltrate the enemy’s castle. This is your 2nd objective and the one that actually wins you the game. Unfortunately, your nemesis has all the weapons and troop types you have, so you will really have to rely on your battle-hardened wits to pull off a successful offensive.
The Gameplay
While most casual gamers will find the Single mode in this game entertaining enough and somewhat challenging due to an advanced AI system and because it has 30 levels with increasing difficulty as you move forward, many more will find the multiplayer mode much more appealing. Imagine a heads up match with your friend while your economics class drags on… aye, that would be fun.
The Looks
The graphics and visuals are always critical for these types of games. Since the game is on a 2D setup, it has an arcade-feel to it, especially since the art is cartoonish in nature. The user interface is well-designed and conveniently set up, which basically allows players to upgrade their troops or characters on the fly as opposed to having to deal with a popup menu that will dutifully interrupt your gaming progress.
With regards to a player’s learning curve, any newbie to game within this multi-faceted genre will find Wars Online an easy game to master. The tutorial is quite easy to follow and extremely useful. Furthermore, players will tend to pick up the more astute tricks and tips in game in 15 minutes or less of playing. Not a lot of tower defense strategy games can boast of that.
The Judgment
If you love tower defense games seasoned with a lot strategy and topped off with an easy to follow arcade feel, Wars Online is a no-brainer for any iOS or Android device owner.
