Squee… what? Oh, squeebles ye be meaning. Aye, I love those little, colorful critters. Too bad that this old pirate be rusty in his math. Ne’er like math so ne’er was good at it. So, this app called Squeebles Fractions ain’t me cup of tea… or rather bottle of rum. Don’t ye worry, tho’. I be letting me first mate handle this seein’ as he be a sucker for numbers.
Squeebles are Keystage Fun’s iconic characters used in most of their educational apps for kids. Well, their apps are normally designed for children. Some examples are Spelling: Squeebles Words, which features tons of word games that users can engage in with the Squeebles, and Times Table: Squeebles Multiplication, another math-based app. Squeebles Fractions builds on those two apps, giving children more number-based fun.
Fractional Fun
Squeebles Fractions, as the name implies, deals with fractions. The app is designed to help children comprehend and understand what fractions are through a quest-style story and gameplay. The app revolves around the activity of baking cakes. The squeebles want you to help them bake some tasty goodies.
Unfortunately, such a want isn’t that easy to achieve especially when you have to deal with the Math Monsters, their perpetual enemy that has robbed you guys of all the ingredients. Your mission is to recover those ingredients by engaging in fraction-full games. For each game you complete successfully or win, you get the ingredients to create the toppings for the cake and the like.
4 Games of Fraction
Squeebles Fractions has 4 types of games. Each game is different from the other and involves varying difficulty and challenges.
- A Piece of Cake – This is basically the games introduction to fractions, making it the best place to start for children unfamiliar with fractions. The game involves helping the squeebles get the cake pieces they want, whether it be a third, a half, or a fourth. You are to help them by tapping the correct fractional piece for each of the squeebles in the picnic.
- Tricky Pairs – This game is a simple memory and match game of fractions. All you have to do is match the fractions that will equal a bigger fraction (e.g. two ½ fractions will equal a 2/4 fraction). The game gets mighty challenging as you move forward and will require a healthy knowledge of denominators and such. This should be reserved for children with a better understanding of fractions.
- Think Big – This is a simple game of fractions. A couple of squeebles will think of different fractions. All you have to do is move the cake (or rather drag it) to the fraction that is biggest.
- Super Sums – This game deals in the addition of fractions. You will be presented with 10 solid questions on adding fractions. Answer them correctly and you may get that little hidden bonus.
Each game type’s difficulty level can be customized but beware, the harder difficulty level should be reserved for users or children with a more complex understanding of fractions.
Achievement Satisfaction
As you complete each game, you will be awarded points or ingredients that you can use to bake the cake that the squeebles are all dying to taste. Sometimes, you may even win trophies or a cake entry ticket. The cake entry ticket allows you to customize a cake the way you see fit and enter it into a cake show contest where the squeebles are judges.
Conclusion
Squeebles Fractions is another great educational app for children that focuses on the fractional side of math. Children will have a lot of fun with it and should be able to fully understand the complexities of fractions at the end. The only drawback with this app is that parents will have to dole out $1.99 to get it for their kids. Well, I think that is a small price to pay to get your children interested in math. What do you think?
