Ironpants Review

On April 18, 2014

Argh, ahoy there ye landlubbers and welcome to another app pirate review. I’ve been busy scouring the Davy Jones’ app store to find the right game to give ye hungry folks. I took my crew and my ship out recently to find that Flappy Bird be the top game on most smart phones. So, I took a dive from my gangplank and found another similar app that be just as fun. Ironpants be just as challenging as the aforementioned game but it does have a few changes that might blow wind into your sails.

A New Superhero

The fame of the bird has become a thing of wonder, and much like other famous genres, there are going to be a few titles that follow suite. Ironpants is one of the first games that try to follow the formula and it certainly won’t be the last. Of course, Ironpants does have its own charms when it comes down to it. First off, when you start the game you’ll be visited by a little superhero that needs to fly through different obstacles to get to his objective. You tap the screen to keep your avatar afloat so timing is a must in the game.

However, it wouldn’t be following in the footsteps of Flappy Bird if it weren’t really hard to play. In this case, Ironpants, the hero in the game, wobbles quite a bit. This either helps you plan your moves or ruin your whole plan before you even get started. This little deviation makes the title harder than Flappy Bird, so people looking for an extra challenge will find this game to be a very welcome addition to their library. As with other simple app games, the addition of a leader-board allows you to compete with anyone around the world.

Retro Looks and Quite Soundtrack

The other thing that separates this game from other titles is that it uses a classic 16-bit art style. Everything from the hero, to the background zooming by is done in a colorful and cool manner. Nothing clashes and the title is very easy on the eyes while you play so that will keep you playing for a while. The animations and movements are very basic though, but the moving buildings in the background are a nice touch.

One of the real differences that make this game a bit of a let down is that it is devoid of a unique soundtrack. Of course, as you get through each hurdle, you’ll hear a cute little bleep and if you fail, you’ll hear the standard punch sound. The game could have been a bit improved if there was actually a music track playing in the background.

The Verdict

Overall, you might have to expect a few other titles that try to follow along with Flappy Bird’s general theme. Ironpants, which may be one of the first, is a decent game that takes the challenge and ramps it up. That being said, you should expect that it would be much harder to get points. At the same time, the title is also free, but comes with ad placements that pop up once in a while if you die. Overall, if you like a bit more challenge out of your tap games, try picking this title up.
