Argh! Ever since that monster Ahab chased after his angry white whale, sea farers of all kinds have been fearin’ the sea. It be his fault that so many creatures in the sea recoil or even strike at our ship. O’ course, I be a pirate, me and me crew would’ve hunted those same whales anyway. Ahab just made the ocean aware of our sometimes ill intentions. These times call for a different approach to the sea though, and I often regret all the fish I have hunted down and eaten. So, instead of turning to darkness once more, my crew has decided that virtual fish be a better haul than real ones. Here be my review of Ocean Hunt, a fishing app that may surprise ye.
Breathing a Bit of Life into a Tired Genre
You’ve seen this kind of game before, there’s no doubt about that. The aim of Ocean Hunt is to spear as many fish as you can while avoiding all the trash and debris that tend to collect in the ocean. There is a twist, however, and that makes the game a bit more challenging. You see, once you’ve caught a fish, you’ll have to reel them out of the water. This is done through the use of a little wheel which you have to spin once you catch something.
On top of that, catching fish starts a time limit which dictates how long a fish stays on your spear. Lastly, there’s the debris you’ll have to avoid once you launch your weapon. All of these elements combined make for a very fast paced game of cat and mouse, so if you enjoy a challenge, then this game is for you.
Pretty Fishies
While Ocean Hunt’s interface leaves much to be desired, the game is still quite pretty. There are a couple of dozen kinds of fish, each with their own unique design. Each also has a certain point value attached to them, which helps you prioritize which targets should go first. The animations in Ocean Hunt are also well executed; everything in the game looks and feels like they are floating.
The tunes in the game are also quite catchy. You might catch yourself bopping your head to the perky music every once in a while. However, as you play on, you might find that these songs get a little to repetitive. While the presentation is a little bare, the simplistic looks really do pull the whole game together.
The Verdict
Ocean Hunt has a lot to offer gamers. Both the atmosphere and mechanics are cool and exciting in line with the nature of burst gaming after all. What would have helped the game out was if it had a little more variety or challenge, but what you get out of Ocean Hunt is pretty well executed. So if you’ve got a bit of time to kill, pick this game up today. This mighty Pirate approves! Garrr…
