Candy Dream: Paper City Review

On August 15, 2013

Argh, the deep ocean be a lonely and sad place at times. There be much places for serenity, and it is very possible ta find a piece o’ yourself lost in the vast deep blue. It be a wondrous, but lonely world we pirates live in, which is why we be so angry at those that throw their trash into the ocean. It happens way too often, and it be a shame. That’s me and me crew take it upon ourselves to raid said ships fer what little they have and send them packin’ from the oceans we lay claim to. This be the reason why the app we be reviewin’ has some close ties to things we find important in our lives. Here be our Candy Dream: Paper City review just ta show you what cute little robots can do.

The Premise

Notably, this little robot has one big objective, and it is pretty cute. You see, the whole idea of the game is to find a way to help Rubik, the eponymous hero, clean his city of dangerous and dirty things. In his quest to make this happen, he is tasked with replacing all the muck with candy and hopeful dreams.

Candy Dream Paper City Review

That’s not much of a stretch when it comes to app games, but the thing you should be taking note of is that the execution (done through the aesthetics of the game) is pretty good. All the little candy canes, cotton balls, and lollipops all have happy faces and smile all the way through the game. Of course, some people might see Rubik’s everlasting stare a little jarring, but don’t worry your little head. That’s just Rubik taking your soul slowly as you play.

The Gameplay and Look

CD is unique in many ways, but at the same time, it feels a lot like other endless runner games in that your objective is to avoid the dangers collect the item. In this case, the dangers come in the form of polluted fish, rockets, poisonous candy, and the things you collect are, well tasty things like lollipops and such. These little collectibles are the things that will jump your score up, and at the end of each level, they are tallied up and you are ranked according to your performance. At the same time, you can also collect shield to extend your life, and rocket blasts of your own so that Rubik can protect himself.

If you find yourself stuck, and being flooded by the dangers instead of the candy, then you’ll still have a chance to protect yourself. In addition to the shields, you’re also treated to a hefty life bar which will keep you going as long as you avoid the rest of the gray rockets. As was stated in the premise, a lot of the story is driven by the look of the game. The environments are very colorful and are attractive to look at. However, sometimes the screen fills up to epic proportions so it is a little harder to keep track of the enemies and the candy. At the same time, you might your eyes a little annoyed at the game because there’s so much happening at any one time on screen and all of them are usually brightly colored.

The Verdict

Armed with a unique little story along with some pretty run of the mill gameplay, Candy Dream is a good foray into endless runners by Mediasoft. At the same time, the title’s pretty cheap, so you pick it up if you really like cute stories. Nice and Solid, Savvy?
