On May 27, 2013

Avast ye landlubber, we be approaching land. Can’t wait to get to me old ball and chain and me little ones. We’ve been at sea for several months and I be missin’ them so. But afore the friendly bucko gets home, I be leavin’ ye with a few more of me reviews, beginning’ with this Dragon’s Lore here.

This is another game from HeroCraft Ltd, which is available for $0.99. This is a puzzle game, which is somewhat similar to Jewel Quest and Bejeweled. The difference is that this game is in 3D format and it offers more game modes. Learn more about this app with this Dragon’s Lore review.

The Basic Game Play

Like other puzzle games of this sort, the main goal is to put together at least 3 blocks that have the same color to make them disappear on the game board. While other games have several gems or blocks available on the board, in this app, there is only one block on the board when you start the game. At the bottom part of the game screen, you will see the next three blocks that you will use. This gives you a heads up so you can strategize on where to place them. The ancient Japanese background and music theme are excellently executed, adding to the great game experience.

There are different modes to choose from, which adds excitement to the game. If you get bored on one mode, you can always try the other options. The story mode follows the adventure of the dragon Kirin. Help him complete his quests by finishing each level. There are different missions on each level, which instructions will be given before the game starts.

Destroy all blocks on the classic mode without the time pressure. If you are feeling confident about your skills, play the arcade mode, which has a time limit. The infinity mode lets you play as long as you can, while the puzzle mode is more difficult to complete. The good thing about this app is that you can play with your friend with the hot seat mode. Each player will take 3 turns each. The player with the higher score wins.

Challenges

While the game play may sound pretty simple, you may find it challenging especially on the higher levels. Furthermore, you are not only dealing with ordinary blocks, there are other blocks that would make completing your goal more difficult including the stagnant blocks that cannot be moved and those that stack up on other blocks.

But don’t worry since there are also special blocks that could help you overcome obstacles including fireballs that can eliminate adjacent blocks even those that are stagnant. All in all, the game play is really fluent and addictive, and as a Pirate i must admit the treasure chests and other artifacts drives me drool like a man who lost his marvels, Gah!

Verdict

The background of the game is visually appealing. Though the sound is not that bad, it may distract you from forming your strategy especially on the game modes that are time pressured. This may not be an action packed game that you will find very challenging, but it is a nice game option when you are feeling bored and would like to pass time. Aight Lads, off Ta’ shore!
