Arr! Dungeons and booty, two words that always make me smile. That is because ya usually can’t get the booty without going through a dungeon or two with your trusty ol’ cutlass and a bottle of rum to chug down. And, ya definitely won’t go down swingin’ in a dark and dusty dungeon full o’ rats if there ain’t no booty for the finding. Aye, so this new app called Dungeon Crasher has definitely got me heart a poundin’.
Hack n’ slash – the most optimal description for this new release from Triniti Interactive Limited. In Dungeon Crasher, you play a knight whose primary goal is to save mankind from the ruthlessness of demons and their horde of undead and evil monsters. Sounds familiar? Well, it really isn’t a brand spanking new concept, but it is something that has become some kind of formulaic success in the realm of mobile gaming.
Now along the way, as you decimate a whole army of fiends and slay an arch demon waiting right behind some rune-crusted door, you will be able to do the usual in these types of games, such as gain new skills, upgrade your weapons, and reinforce your armor – every RPG-fantasy fanatics dream, eh? Aye, and there is potentially a lot more to look forward to once you play the game in all its glory.
The Good
Like every other mobile game within the action-RPG type of category, Dungeon Crasher delivers a lot of noteworthy traits, some of which most gamers will look for. For starters, the battles can be extremely brutal with blood and bits flying all around as you slash a demon from shoulder to hip. Hence, this game is perfect for those that have a keen craving for blood.
The graphics is solid as most of the art done for this game were hand-drawn. So, expect classic visuals reminiscent of the old, fantasy action games on the PC and may even be likened to the old Legend of Zelda on the Nintendo 64. The character you control is detailed and the environments you venture on are superb.
Unlike most of the action games nowadays, Dungeon Crasher isn’t an endless adventure without specific goals. The game actually has over 90 action-packed missions to complete, all of which leads to some kind of boss that you have to slay or some damsel you have to save. And within those missions, you will encounter a massive array of monster types, from the usual orcs and goblins to actual devils with pitchforks and whips.
The Bad
So, we have enumerated the good. Let us know go with the bad. The game was launched last Oct. 4, 2012. At that time, it was peddled for a dollar per download. Unfortunately, since the release was full of bugs and seemed incomplete, a lot of negative user reviews came flooding out. Some would report that the gold earned in missions would disappear as soon as the mission ends, disabling one’s ability to upgrade armor and weapons. Others would report imprecise controls and lags. The list goes on.
But that was a month ago. Since then, the developer moved to a free to download scheme and even released a patch or update to fix all the bugs reported. And from our tests, most of them were actually fixed. Nevertheless, if Triniti Entertainment Limited wants this app to soar and make money for them, more patches or updates may be needed to rectify some of the other bugs still plaguing it.
The Bottom Line
Dungeon Crasher is a nice hack n’ slash iOS app that has cool graphics and a winning concept. It is loaded with potential. Unfortunately, potential will always be only potential unless it is honed. Triniti Entertainment Limited needs to work on this game a little in order to make its potential shine on through and possibly make money off of it. For the gamer, since it is free to download and play, go on ahead and start slaying.
