A pirate’s life be nothing more than many the many challenges o’ tha oceans. First off, we have ta figure out how to preserve food fer month at a time (canned goods helped us greatly in that respect). Secondly, we be always troubled by the issues o’ the ocean, and how storms rip across our plans like they be nothin’. Lastly, there be the matter o’ dockin’ in different locations and port cities fer food and other such supplies.
All these combined, make a pirates life a tad harder ta live than most other paths that people choose ta take. This be why me and me crew love to face down that challenge, fer the victory after is always followed by a sorta serenity. So, if we be talkin’ about challenge, how exactly does a Kid Tripp review fit into that?
The Gameplay
Okay, so the first thing you’re probably going to notice, if you’re a Nintendo fan that is, is that the little lad in the game looks a tad like Nes from the Mother series. Besides that, the game does take a lot of cues from old school games from the 80’s-90’s era because there is a lot of challenge to be had in this title. The game is an auto runner, much like other titles for the iOS, but at the same time, it feels a lot like the old Mario games. You can take out enemies by jumping on them, or throwing rocks in their direction to destroy them. At the same time, there’s a lot of platforming to be had in this title, so expect your fingers to be challenged when trapeze-ing around each level.
Of course, there is a lot of difference between these two games, because instead of giving you a time limit to allow for some rests, the game shoots you through each level in a matter of seconds. This really makes each encounter a lot harder, and gamers that like their hard titles will surely find a spot in their heart for KT. Casual gamers, however, will find the unforgiving nature of this title a little too abrasive to enjoy. In fact, more experience players might even find this title a little too hard for their tastes. This just makes each success even sweeter though, as levels are conquered by skill and sometimes just a bit of patience. You’re tasked with collecting coins spread all throughout the level and killing enemies gets you a bit of a boost.
The Look
To expound with the Nes comment above, this game looks a lot like it was ripped out of the 80’s and early 90’s. The art is 8-bit and at the same time, the retro feel makes it a unique experience akin to the Contra re-release. The sound takes cues from the old 8-bit tracks you might remember from your childhood, so this title is definitely a treat for the older gaming generation.
Overall, you take Super Mario, add some special effects and get Kid Tripp, simple as that. My crew of old Seadogs take fancy for this title just because of their old age. Ahh my friend, that’s how it is when you get older, you get use to thing, savvy?
The Verdict
While this title isn’t unforgiving it feels like it’s breaching that line. Each level is fast and hard to complete, but doing so makes you feel like you just conquered a giant dragon. Pick this title up if you really want a new challenge in the form of something old and retro.
