Thar she blows! Arrr! Don’t you just love whales spoutin’ up seawater like thar was no tomorrow? Well, I do. I always fine meself hypnotized whene’er me eyes spot a big old whale right beside me ship. What a sight! But enuff o’ that. Let me chat with ya about the new game I just discovered on me iPad. It’s called Mirrors of Albion and I be pretty sure ya’ll love it, especially if ye have a keen interest in detective work. Here is me review.
A Classic Find the Object
Mirrors of Albion is actually one of the most awaited mobile apps this year. It just launched a few weeks ago and seems to be a solid winner. And, as stated in the paragraph title, it is a “find the hidden object” kind of game. If you are not familiar with such games, just picture this… you are shown a room full of stuff scattered all around. You are given a list of objects to find among the mess. Find each one in the list and you win that round and can move on to bigger, more challenging, and better rooms.
In Mirrors of Albion, which I have tested fully on my iPad in full HD, you play a detective trying to solve the mysterious disappearance of a woman named Alice. The setting is in London, so expect the environment as well as the decorations in every room you encounter to be classic and elegant. This, of course, includes the various homes and shops you will come across as you walk the streets. Investigate each house or shop, or just go along and follow the flow of the main plot. However, it is still recommended to look for side quests and other side activities in order to gain more experience, items, and other stuff that may aid you in your main quest.
It’s Free to Play
Anything free to play is definitely worth the download. And that goes even for games that actually turn out to be trash. Fortunately, Mirrors of Albion isn’t trash. It is actually a beautifully designed gaming app that mixes great visuals and scenic landscapes with mind-boggling puzzles. Unfortunately, though, like a lot of the other free-to-play apps within the same genre, you are actually limited in terms of locations to investigate in at the start. Don’t worry, as you continue your successful detective work, you will be able to unlock newer locations and more worthy challenges. But, if you can’t wait for that, you can always take the shortcut and spend real money on the game.
It’s Full of Wonderful Surprises
Mirrors of Albion has a somewhat unique feature that most games in its category don’t have – a lot of mysterious surprises. Imagine having to deal with sudden weather changes that will fog and limit your visibility to see certain elements you need in your quest. Yup, you will encounter challenges like these once in a while during your play. You can of course use tokens to remove these, if you can find them. If you can’t you can also consider purchasing premium currency to buy the token you need. Or, you can just live with the obstacle and try to figure things out with that added difficulty in your face.
Another thing that may somewhat bring you down is the limited actions you can make as you play. The whole game runs on a typical energy system. You are allowed a finite amount of action points based on your energy. Once your energy is spent, you will need to wait for it to recharge before you can continue investigating. Powerups and boosts are available and can actually be found in-game. However, most of the time, you will be wishing that you had enough premium currency to purchase the boosts you need so that you can continue playing.
The Bottom Line
The game is a classic. Great graphics, a simple story, a nice setting, and a load of surprises – what more can you ask for? Oh yes, it is free to play as well. The game is compatible for both iOS and Android devices, although I highly recommend it for iPad owners.
