Aaarrr! Now this is me type of app. Har, har, har! Aye, Samurai Defender tis’ called and I be slashing me blade everywhere, killin’ monsters and whate’er else this pirate comes across. I be pretty sure that ye will like this little bugger a lot. Blast them cursed Samurai! It be barely a month since me and me crew landed on the shore’s o’ the rising sun and those damned warriors harried us until we set sail for another part o’ the island.
They be a truly fearsome bunch, them samurai, and it be an honor that I face one o’ them in combat. O’ course, I wasn’t born yesterday, so I will come prepared when I face armored monsters and so will me crew. Aye, it be a game about samurai, but how does it stack when it comes to training me men?
The Gameplay
As the title explains, you are a samurai who is tasked with defending a castle from hordes of opposing warlords. Initially, all you have to do is to tap on the target and wait for your archer to make the hit. It’s a simple premise, but the speed by which the hordes move is what makes the game interesting. As you progress through the levels, you will starts seeing enemies moving at fasters speeds than before and after a while, tapping after each opponent gets hard.
This is why the power-ups are so integral to your success because without them your castle would be overrun in an instant. The power ups, are very well varied and are also affordable in terms of in game currency. They range from the addition of archers on the wall, to full on armies that you call upon when you need help. Lastly, you’ll also be fighting some of the most well known warlords during the early period of Japan’s Empire and that adds a little extra flavor to the game.
The Look of the ancient Samurai
App games often share a certain look to them, and that’s not because of popularity. Usually, when you boot up a game app, you’d expect it to look like a cartoon. Samurai Defender doesn’t deviate from that formula, as it boasts a thickly lined cartoon art style. In all honesty, the art and animations are very detailed, and do throw back to the days of the Samurai warrior.
The backgrounds are very simplistic and you won’t see much more beyond the initial level as you are only defending one castle. The enemies often come in heavy numbers, and that also comes with some pretty sweet animations. Each attack is complemented by a thunderous striking sound and there are enough enemy types so that you don’t end up recycling the same ones over and over again. The game isn’t top tier eye candy, but at the same time, it doesn’t look half bad either.
The Verdict
SD is a game for those that like to have a little more interaction with their tower defense games. However, since a lot of the work falls upon yours shoulders, you’d probably feel like you are a direct part of the action. Of course, since it is set in only one level, you’re probably going to feel like you’re repeated certain waves again and again. The title is also free on the market, but be aware; there are many ads in the free version so if you like the game, buy it and get rid of those little nuisances.
