Super Falling Fred Review

On February 14, 2013

Ahoy! Nothing gets me riled up more than me cutlass shankin’ a British imperial or starin’ at a huge chest full o’ gold trinkets. Arrr! Now that be the life. But ye know what? This here app from Dedalord called Super Falling Fred has got me hooked like the hand of me old friend Captain Hook.

Super Falling Fred is the newest update building on the previous successes of the old one. Yes, you guessed it right, Super Falling Fred is an endless falling app, very similar to an endless runner game like Temple Run, where the longer you survive or, in this case, the farther you fall, the higher your score.

The Game

As mentioned previously, Super Falling Fred is an endless falling app. Basically, you are tasked to aid Fred, a rag doll, in fall through an endless and constantly changing chute full of various obstacles that can literally obliterate Fred’s already funny face. The farther Fred falls, the higher your score, the objective is as simple as that.

The Controls

The controls are simple. Just tilt here and there and Fred will move to and from. Bear in mind that since Fred is a rag doll, the physics of his movement may seem sluggish, just as if you were controlling the fall of a real rag doll by slight pushes and pulls here and there. So, don’t expect Fred to be very responsive to your manipulations, which makes timing and quick decisions supremely critical here

The Obstacles

The chute Fred is falling through constantly changes the farther he falls. And with those changes, a variety of obstacles will come at him fast. Spikes, platforms, whirling blades, are just some of the things that Fred will want to avoid. If he hits any of these, his face will register the damage, which you will be able to see through the portrait display on the upper left corner of the screen. If he keeps getting hit, his face will become all bloody and damaged. Continue that and he will soon perish and the game will end.

Power Ups and New Characters

The game also features a bevy of power ups to help you assist Fred as he falls. For instance, you can collect the letters that Fred encounters on his way down to spell his name. Do this successfully and you will get the meteor upgrade that will push you further down with no obstacles, providing you a boost in your score.

Super Falling Fred App

You can purchase power ups as well inside the in-game store anytime, which is located at the lower right corner of the screen. Just tap on it, purchase what you want, and use it when you necessary. I personally recommend using the Shield power up, which basically protects Fred from a finite amount of hits. Lucky charms are nice too because they randomly produce power ups such as heal Fred, the revive Fred, and teleport Fred boosts as you fall, though luck plays a huge part as to how useful those power ups will be.

Aside from power ups, Super Falling Fred introduces a bunch of new characters, which you can unlock and use by trading in skullies (the in-game currency, which can be really difficult to earn). These new characters make the game a little bit interesting, especially if you find Fred’s face a bit annoying already.

The Verdict

Super Falling Fred is solid as a rock when it comes to its gameplay, game concept, and graphics. The experience is more phenomenal when playing it on a tablet though. So, I really recommend using an iPad or an Android tablet when playing this free to play endless runner as opposed to using a smaller screened smartphone.
