Avast ye landlubber, we be approaching land. Can’t wait to get to me old ball and chain and me little ones. We’ve been at sea for several months and I be missin’ them so. But afore the App Pirate gets home, I be leavin’ ye with a few more of me reviews, beginning’ with this Terraria review here.
Explore and Create
Terraria is a sandbox game developed by 505 Games. While it has just been recently released for iOS users, it has been around since 2011, though it was only compatible with computers running Windows by that time. If you are familiar with Minecraft, this is somewhat similar to that game. Aside from the fact that both are sandbox type of game, you will be creating your own world and will be fighting evil forces to survive. However, there’s more to explore, discover and build in Terraria.
There are over 200 recipes for creating weapons, potions and various objects; several block types to use in building and over 75 monsters to fight, aside from the bosses. The vast world is for you to discover. You will be dropped in a random 2D world and that’s where your adventure begins. There is no specific goal in this game, but to of course, survive. It’s up to you how you will play your game, though there is a non-player character or NPC that will be there to guide you in the beginning of the game. In this app, you are not just creating new and better items for the sake of creating them.
It’s Old School
You need to unlock more powerful items, as well as NPCs that will also help you in your adventure. You can control the game with the left and right button. The left button is for moving your character, while the other button is for performing tasks like chopping woods, building, etc. It could be a bit difficult to hit on your target at times because of the size of the screen. However, there is an option to zoom in a specific area so you can hit on the right pixels accurately.
The whole 2D look and the background music is what you would usually see in old 2D games like Mario. If you played the old video and arcade games like this when you were a kid, it would definitely bring back the memories. However, it would be better if the graphics is more crisp. Also, some of the texts are difficult to read because of the font style, as well as the size.
Pros and Cons
It has a lot to offer so this is something that you can play for a long time. The background music adds life to the adventure. The 2D graphics take you back to the “Mario Brothers” era. It mixes sandbox building game with battle as you get to fight with the bosses. You will not get bored, as there is so much to discover and create.
The graphics are not that crisp and some texts are unintelligible. It is also missing the multiplayer mode, which is available in the PC version. It would be more fun being able to embark in an adventure with friends, like this mighty Pirate does when exploring the seven seas.
The Verdict
Terraria is generally a nice game to play on your mobile device. The cost that you will pay for getting the game is worth it since you can expect to have long hours of game play. The graphics may not be that amazing but it is not too bad either so you will be able to live with it, especially with all the other good things that the game has to offer. Actually, some people like this kind of retro look.
