WordHive Review

On February 25, 2014

Ahoy there, mateys! It is I, the App Pirate ready to bring ya another one o’ the best games I could scour from the Play Store. I pride myself on being a clever dog, outsmarting even the best admirals the seven seas have to offer. This be why I enjoy playin’ the occasional logic and brain twister game.

Me phone has quite a few o’ them; from good old sudoku, to the brain exercisn’ games that feature a ton o’ different mini challenges. My favorite kind is probably the different word games that test me vocabulary. So when I found that WordHive did exactly that, I downloaded the app as fast as me ship’s WiFi would allow.

A Unique Twist to Old School Word Formation

Most word games usually follow a certain established formula. First off, you’ll have to tile them together and then connect each word to each other. However, the difference in WordHive is that there is a limited amount of space to form a certain number of words. The game will show you each word you can form on the left hand side of the screen. Each batch of jumbled letters on the screen are laid out in a small hexagons, and you only have 20 squares to work with. For every word you solve, you’ll get more Honey, which are the points in this game. The trick here is that you have to use all of the spaces to spell out each word.

Limitations are what makes WordHive very challenging because it demands you to find the right patterns. At first, you’ll only be facing easy challenges that you can connect within minutes. However, over time, you’ll have to start thinking harder about each pattern and word. That’s because the random letters become more obscure. Lastly, the game also imposes a time limit for each level, and that adds a bit more difficulty to the game.  WordHive really takes the formula of word games and adds its own flair, which is a welcome thing these days.

Pretty and Simple Looks

A word game doesn’t need fancy graphics to make it unique and WordHive doesn’t do much to change that. First off, the overall look and feel of the game is simple. Each hexagon looks like it belongs to a honeycomb, and their yellow shine makes them easy to look at.

The forest in the background is well drawn and animates from time to time. Lastly, the game forces your phone to go into landscape mode, which makes picking out words and exchanging tiles much easier. The soundtrack is a bit of a Footnote in this game, its nothing special worth mentioning.

The Verdict

Word games are starting to homogenize, which makes every new change a welcome one. WordHive takes an established formula and then works its own magic into it. The hexagonal gameplay system, coupled with the time challenge makes WordHive a little more difficult.

However, those who enjoy that level of difficulty are sure to get a kick out of WordHive. The app is currently free on every store, and it only pushes one ad on you. When you start it up, the ad will pop out, and then you can keep playing with no further intrusions.
