World of Blocks Review

On February 1, 2013

Ahoy there me fellow buckos, I be back to tell ya a story about blocks. Har, har, har! Tis’ was a joke friends. I be a pirate with a sense of humor aye? Well, ya would be too if ya played this mighty fine mobile game called World of Blocks. Aye, tis’ a strangely fascinating little app that can be as addictive One-eyed Jack’s bottle o’ rum.

World of Blocks is a genuinely unique arcade game where everything you see are made of blocks – some kind of 4 dimensional world reminiscent of the days of yore when computer games could only be played through big and bulky floppy disks and featured crude, block-like visuals. Well, World of Blocks is a step above that but still gives you that feeling.

What is it About?

So, the main gist of this classic of an arcade game is simple. Your character is fitted with a cannon that shoots out death-dealing ammo that can be devastating to those blue blocks floating around each and every level or playing field. Now, on each level, you will see a number of green blocks, with funny faces I might add. These are your friends and you are actually tasked to protect them from those blue, mischievous, and rather aggressive blocks. How, you may ask? By killing them, of course. It is as simple as that. Unfortunately, things aren’t as easy as they seem. Your cannon balls, if you can call it that, is limited. This means that you will really need to plan your shots to kill as many blue blocks as you can per shot. Aye, so just like that, this arcade game has turned into a puzzler. Cool, aye.

Inside the Game

The game itself has 6 long chapters to play through. Each chapter has about 12 missions or levels. As you go through each level, the difficulty increases significantly. At the same time, the number of cannon balls you can let loose decreases. It figures, right? Well, that is what makes this game extremely challenging albeit mildly frustrating. Expect to go through the higher levels of each chapter more than once in order to beat it.

The Visuals

Some people may find this whole 4 dimensional graphics old and boring, which will translate to negative hype for the game. However, the game is called World of Blocks, which basically screams out loud the concept of the game, explore a world made of blocks. That said the old-school graphics does fit the bill. So, if you are looking for high-end visuals from some of the more popular mobile arcade apps, you might feel sorely disinterested in this game. On the other hand, if you are a gamer that pays more attention to the actual gameplay as opposed to visuals, then World of Blocks is a fantastic arcade and puzzler app for you.

Currently, World of Blocks is available on iTunes for about a dollar. It is compatible for the iPad, iPhone, iPad Touch, and even the latest iPad Mini. The game is also available on Android devices, though we only really tested it on iOS devices so far.
