OMG Pirates Review

On October 25, 2012

Avast ye mateys, the app pirate is back for more mobile game reviews that will make your existing iPhones, iPads, and Android devices beaded with your sweat and tears. Nah, but seriously, this app that I be telling you about is something I consider to be sacrilege, and I will tell you why – because it is all about lambasting and damaging the mighty reputation of pirates. Aye, OMG Pirates, the second mobile game launched by MikaMobile, after the highly successful Zombieville, is all about killing us pirates. Ye can tell from me ton that I be very unhappy – aaaaarrrggghhh!

Killin’ Pirates

OMG Pirates, one would think, would be a game where you play a pirate or something to that extent. The reality, however, is the game revolves about the ninja character you will be controlling. And the only pirates you will see in this game are the ones that the ninja character will main, slice, kick, and kill – with your help of course. So, what is the story behind this pirate-hate?

The story of the game begins when your town – a town that raises ninjas (where you live) – is suddenly and violently invaded by a bunch of stinking pirates. They pillage and pretty much rape everything you hold dear. As an act of revenge, you take it upon yourself, armed with a host of ninja skills you have mastered and other tools, to kill every pirate you come across – whether they flee or stand and fight.

The game is full of non-stop ninja action where you execute powerful kicks, punches, and the like in wonderful combos and routines that will literally send your pirate foes flying. Hence, if you are playing this game, know that you will only get some reprieve from the slaughter you will be enacting from the cut scenes and very quirky story-based dialogues. And, should you find the time to take a breather, your wind might just fly away from you due to the funny transportation modes your character has to go through to move from one massacre-filled level to the next.

Mastering the Ninja

The controls are rather easy to manage. Instead of the usual mobile games where your moves will be based on a variety of timely slides, swipes, tilts, and taps, OMG pirates employs a nifty on-screen gamepad. There is a shuriken-like icon at the right that allows you to move up, down, right, or left depending on what end of the shuriken you tap. Aside from that, you will have three distinct buttons. The green one is for jumping, the red is for attacking, and the button you see at the top left beside the gauge is the one you will press when you see it full. This will unleash a massive special combo that will annihilate whatever foes you have in front, back, or at the sides of you. Bear in mind that the game allows for 360 degree movements. Hence, the virtual gamepad on the screen.

It Looks and Sounds Good

Yes it does. The graphics may be a little bit cartoony, but it does employ a wee bit of 3D enhancements as well as a host of well-thought out special effects, which you will find pretty awesome once you are able to whip out a combination of attacks. The game also sounds superb. And, believe it or not, listening to the game becomes rather important since many of the enemy tells can only be caught through listening and not by looking. So, make sure to play the game with full audio if you really want to climb the levels.

The Verdict

The game is an old school arcade game where your main goal is to kill, kill, and kill. There are 10 levels all in all and three particular modes, all of which have their own difficulty settings. So, replay-ability isn’t an issue. If you are looking for a good action-packed game that you can waste the time away with, then OMG Pirates will definitely be a good investment for you at $1.99.
